Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) is the recording of voices or sounds not able to be heard by human ears. Here's a guide on how to accomplish a recording.

Steps

  1. Buy a recording device. A recording device with an external microphone is better than a internal microphone because you may hear the inner workings of the machine, thus making pretty much any EVP impossible to hear.
  2. Pick a destination for your recording. A cemetery, old house, or any place that makes you feel uneasy will work. There have also been cases of toys or objects giving off EVPs. For example, this is a record of a haunted doll that gives off EVPs (read the Backstory on the website).
  3. Find a good place to set the recorder down. It may sound silly, but make sure you find a quiet place. Use your ears before you set the recorder going. If there are noises in the background they may interfere with picking out any EVPs. Make sure you make notes of the noises in the background (cars, children playing, animals, airplanes etc) so that you can easily pick them out. It can be easy to confuse one noise with another if you're not aware it's there.
  4. Make sure you record the time, your name, the date, and the location. If you feel a presence, ask a question. You could ask "Who are you?", "Is there anyone here?", "What is your name?". These questions can get a response.
  5. Walk away from the recorder and say that footsteps being recorded are yours. Leave the proximity of the recorder, take pictures to catch any supernatural activity while you walk around. Leave for at least 5 minutes, and as long as up to half an hour. It may also be helpful to walk around with the recorder and ask questions.
  6. Come back to the recorder, saying that you are returning. Shut the recorder off. Now you can either listen with earphones to the recording or buy special EVP software that will show when a noise is different from the rest. Software like that can also let you snip the piece you want for easy listening.
  7. Be very quiet while listening. EVPs can be loud or soft, and are most of the time mumbled. If you hear something, listen intently. Rewind to hear it again, do this until you have an idea of what was said.

Tips

  • Recorders with external microphones are much better than ones with internal microphones.
  • You will not always get an EVP.
  • Let others listen to the EVP. See what they say about the sound.

Warnings

  • Don't trespass! Do not venture onto private property, as it will be considered trespassing.
  • Always err on the side of caution. Do not taunt spirits in order to get them to respond to you, in very rare cases they can have the energy to interact physically with you. Pushing, shoving, hair pulling, and thrown objects have been reported. If you feel you are threatened in any way by a ghost leave the area at once. In extreme cases you could be choked, beaten or slapped by a spirit. However these instances are EXTREMELY rare, and you should not be afraid.
  • In rare circumstances, you may get a clinger ghost. These ghosts will follow you home and may haunt you. Talk to a person in touch with the supernatural or a priest to get rid of the ghost.
